Just because we're LGBTQ don't mean we don't have rights!
We, the LGBTQ+ community, are not a monolith. We are artists, teachers, parents, doctors, laborers – a vibrant tapestry of greatness from diverse experiences, identities, and backgrounds. Yet, despite our differences, or our backgrounds–we share a common thread: the persistent struggle for equality, a struggle that felt deeply threatened during the last Trump administration and continues to reverberate worse today. Why do people consistently try to bring us down, or break us down? We never wanted more then what we deserve. Which included what every human deserve– Respect and inclusivity! "We just want to be married and miserable like everyone else" – we simply want to exist, to love, to live authentically, to just be! free from discrimination and fear. We’re not trying to force our lifestyles on anyone; we're simply asking to be treated with the same respect and dignity afforded to all.
We’ve fought long and hard for visibility and acceptance. We’ve marched, protested, and organized, chipping away at the walls of prejudice and discrimination, brick by muthafuckin' painful brick. We’ve celebrated momentous victories like the legalization of same-sex marriage, but these triumphs often feel fragile, vulnerable to the shifting sands of political power. The resurgence of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and policies under the Trump administration, and lingering effects today, feel like a brutal setback, a cruel reminder of the uphill battle we still face.

A Disheartening Survey
A recent Pew Research Center survey stated that Most LGBTQ+ Adults Expect Trump’s Policies to Affect Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans People Negatively underscored our anxieties. A staggering 78% of LGBTQ+ adults anticipated a negative impact from the Trump administration's policies on transgender individuals, and 71% expected the same for gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. These statistics aren't mere numbers; they represent the palpable fear that grips our community, the constant worry about losing hard won rights and protections. These are the anxieties we live with daily. This fear isn't unfounded. The Trump administration's policies actively targeted the LGBTQ+ community in several ways:
Rollback of Protections: Numerous executive orders and policy changes rolled back protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, housing, healthcare, and education. The erosion of these safeguards created an environment of increased vulnerability and discrimination. This is an intentional and a cruel way to make us sheep upmungst wolves.
Anti Transgender Legislation: The administration actively supported and encouraged the passage of discriminatory legislation targeting transgender individuals, particularly transgender youth. This included bathroom bills and restrictions on gender affirming care. Check out some of the policies and decisions by visiting the ACLU's analysis on Trump and LGBTQ+ rights. This resource provides valuable insights into the impact on the LGBTQ+ community and the ongoing fight for equality.
Discriminatory Rhetoric: The constant barrage of anti LGBTQ+ rhetoric from high ranking officials normalized prejudice and emboldened those who harbor hateful sentiments. Words have consequences, and inflammatory speech fuels discrimination and violence.
Appointees Hostile to LGBTQ+ Rights: The selection of judges and officials known for their opposition to LGBTQ+ rights contributed to a climate of fear and uncertainty. The judicial branch plays a critical role in upholding our rights, and the appointments made during that time cast a long shadow. Trump and Elon have created a group of "yes" men around them so they can control us, and you who voted for him–with a dictatorship.
These actions weren't isolated incidents; they were part of a coordinated effort to undermine the progress we had made and to create a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ individuals. The impact is far reaching and deeply personal. The people who govern us are showing us how much they wish for our demise, not our obtain ability.

The consequences are far reaching, affecting not just our individual well being, but also our families, communities and our future. As one transgender friend shared, "The constant fear of losing access to healthcare, the fear of being outed and facing violence, it's exhausting. It takes away your ability to focus on anything else, on building a life." Her words echo the sentiments of so many within our community
Moving Forward: A Call for Inclusivity
We need to actively work toward a future where LGBTQ+ inclusivity is not a matter of debate, but a fundamental right. This requires a multi pronged approach:
- Stronger Legal Protections: We need comprehensive non discrimination laws that explicitly protect LGBTQ+ individuals in all areas of life.
- Increased Cultural Competency: Education and awareness campaigns are crucial to combat prejudice and promote understanding.
- Safe Spaces: Building and supporting LGBTQ+ safe spaces where individuals can find community, support, and affirmation is essential.
- Identity Affirmation: We must actively promote policies that support gender affirming care, name and gender marker changes, and other forms of identity affirmation.
- Relationship Dynamics: Creating an environment that values all types of relationships, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, helps foster true equality.
- Social Justice Advocacy: Continuing to organize and advocate for our rights is critical to ensuring that the progress we've made isn't lost.

"We are resilient, we are strong, and we will not be silenced. We will continue to fight for our rights, for our visibility, and for a future where we can all live authentically and without fear."
